Psychiatric care in The Netherlands is mostly provided by (university) hospitals and other (municipal) mental health centers. It has a high level of organisation and follows the professional guidelines on mental health. The psychiatry training shows some variation between the different centres but always complies with the national plan for psychiatry training that includes courses and practice in psychopathology, psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, etc. The residency program takes 4,5 years, aimed at teaching psychiatry in all phases of life (Child and Adolescent, Adult, Old Age). After 2,5 years, the following 2 years of the training can be individually tailored towards the residents individual interests: Child and Adolescent, Adult or Old age Psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, hospital psychiatry etc.
