2020 Porto Research Award Winner: Lucy Stirland

The EFPT is proud to congratulate Dr. Lucy Stirland, the winner of the 2020 Porto Research Award!

Lucy Stirland is a trainee in Old Age Psychiatry in Edinburgh, UK. She recently took time out of training to complete a PhD at the University of Edinburgh on the epidemiology of multimorbidity, polypharmacy and mental health in ageing. In 2015, she enjoyed a valuable EFPT exchange placement in Grenoble, France.

The project she submitted for this award was an observational study of 500 participants of the European Prevention of Alzheimer’s Dementia (EPAD) cohort. This was the first study to explore the relationship between having multiple chronic conditions and cerebrospinal fluid amyloid-β. The results were surprising: having more chronic conditions was associated with a lower risk of amyloid positivity. This suggested that although multimorbidity is common in people with dementia, amyloid may not explain the link.
