Erenköy Mental Health Research and Training Hospital


It is a mental health hospital located in a pine grove of 96 thousand square meters in the Erenköy district of Istanbul’s Kadıköy district. Between 1931 and 1976, the Erenköy Sanatorium was established via initiatives of tuberculosis association. It has gradually grown and developed with many new additional buildings being made. During 40s, 50s and 60s, when the war against tuberculosis was a priority in our country as well as in the world, the Erenköy Sanatorium undertook a substantial mission in fighting tuberculosis with both nurses raised in nursing school and patients treated in it. In 1976, institution initiated to serve to psychiatry patients with name of Erenköy Mental Hospital.


In 2006, it was transferred to Ministry of Health and turned into a training and research hospital. In 2016, it was affiliated to Health Sciences University. It has been training psychiatry trainees since 2007. Erenköy Mental Health Hospital has a women’s inpatient service with 80 bed capacity, two men’s inpatient service with 100 bed capacity, a substance abuse service with 40 bed capacity, an outpatient and daycare psychotherapy center where individual and group therapies are applied, a health board service where judicial cases are assessed and related official reports are made and two outpatient clinic. Thus it has equipment which will serve broad spectrum of psychiatry patient. There are four community mental health centers in the different districts of Istanbul connected to the Erenköy center in which rehabilitation treatments are applied for especially psychotic patients.


In 2016, neurology and child and adolescent psychiatry trainees began to be accepted to the hospital for educational purposes. Currently there are approximately 80 psychiatry, child psychiatry and neurology trainees. In addition to this, there are 6 lecturers, 5 chief trainees and 30 specialists in psychiatry clinic, 2 lecturers, 1 chief trainee, 7 specialists in neurology clinic and 1 lecturer and 5 specialists in child and adolescent psychiatry. Apart from this, an anesthesiology and reanimation specialist and 1 internal medicine specialist are working in the hospital.
