Brief description of the City, Hospital and Unit/Department:

Pamplona is a smart/middle-sized city in the North of Spain, capital of the region of Navarra, relatively close to the sea (Cantabric), mountain (Pyrenees), bigger cities (Bilbao, Zaragoza), and France. It has train and airplane communications with Madrid and Barcelona, and it’s quality of life is high. The Clinica Universidad de Navarra is the biggest private university hospital in Spain, accredited for Joint Commission International since 2004, and a reference for patients of all the country and abroad (Portugal, Latin America, Angola…). Its close link with the University of Navarra, a leading university in Spain, provides a high level of basic and clinical research and graduate and postgraduate teaching. The Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology Department comprises a multidisciplinary team of Mental Health Care providers working close to other medical specialties.

Requirements : a basic level of Spanish is needed for the communication with most of the patients and among the professionals. Our exchange programs would fit best for trainees on the second half of their residency (i.e. 3rd-5th year for many of the EFPT countries).

-Travel and health insurance needed: It is advisable. Some European citizens may ask for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Accommodation:

Moving through the city: public transport (bus) is available across the city, although the hospital can be reached by walking in less than 30-40 minutes from virtually every point of the city.

Name of the program 1: General Adult Psychiatry

Description of the program 1:

Over a period of 4-6 weeks, the trainee will have the opportunity to work in the Adult Psychiatry Unit of a general hospital in Spain. The main contents of the program include: outpatient section, acute psychiatric ward (with Electroconvulsive Therapy sessions two-three days a week), outpatient and inpatient liaison psychiatry, Family Therapy and Clinical Psychology (cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal and general psychotherapy, relaxation techniques and Mindfulness). These contents will be adapted according to the personal preferences of each trainee. The trainee will work among other trainees and have a supervision by senior specialists.

Name of the program 2: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Description of the program 2:

Over a period of 4-6 weeks, trainee will have the opportunity to work in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit of a general hospital in Spain. The main contents of the program include: outpatient section, acute psychiatric ward (for adolescents, included in the adult acute psychiatric ward), outpatient and inpatient liaison psychiatry, and Clinical Psychology (individual and group psychotherapies). These contents will be adapted according to the personal preferences of each trainee. The trainee will work among other trainees and have a supervision by senior specialists.

BARCELONA

 

COMPLEX ASSISTENCIAL SALUT MENTAL, HOSPITAL BENITO MENNI

Brief description of the Hospital and Unit/Department:

The “Complex Assistencial Salud Mental Benito Menni” was funded in 1881, and was spread out up to 25 different countries worldwide providing health assistance towards the poorest, socially marginalized, disabled and mentally ill citizens. It is nowadays one of the oldest psychiatrist centres of Spain. The hospitals offered for international exchange program are situated both in Sant Boi del Llobregat and Granollers (around 30 minutes outside Barcelona with public transport). This Health Complex has a whole range of different departments which means it has a multidisciplinary, holistic and global team. I

Requirements: Medium level of Spanish is required and mandatory for the communication with most of the patients. Knowledge of Catalan is a plus since it is also very widely spoken.

-Travel and health insurance needed: It is advisable. Emergency treatment is always given to any citizens worldwide. Nevertheless, European citizens should  ask for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Moving through the city: public transport is available across the city in Barcelona (bus, metro, bike lane, train, tram). To reach the hospital there is a direct train towards Sant Boi del Llobregat every 5 minutes from Barcelona – Plaça Espanya (30 minutes). Name of the program 3: General Adult Psychiatry

Description of the program 3:

Over a period of 4-6 weeks, the trainee will have the opportunity to work in the  Adult Acute Psychiatry Unit of both: a General and a Monographic (only mental health patients) Hospitals situated in the outskirts of Barcelona. The acute psychiatric ward is composed by: Daily Follow up of Patients (interviews, treatment, social and family overview, etc), Electroconvulsive Therapy (sessions every day in both hospitals), Clinical Psychology Therapy (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Group Therapy, etc.), Social Workers, Psychiatric Emergency Room (only available in Granollers), and Neuropsychology.

There is also availability to attend to clinical rotations in the Daily Care Mental Health Department, Dual Psychiatric Department (addictions and mental health) and outpatient clinics.

The trainee will work among other local trainees and  will always be supervised by senior psychiatrists specialists.

Name of the program 4: Adolescent Psychiatry Ward

Description of the program 4:

Over a period of 4-6 weeks, trainee will have the opportunity to work in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in both Acute and Subacute Unit in Sant Boi del Llobregat.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Ward has two sections: Acute and Subacute patients with up to 50 beds (25 beds each). The Subacute unit is supra sectorial, which means that it accepts patients from all over the Catalan Region, being the only subacute department available in Catalunya for Adolescents.

The trainee will work among other local trainees and have a supervision by senior specialists.
